BSN is an official host organization for the National DNA Day Celebration in Nepal as they are registered National DNA Day Event initiated by the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI). “World DNA Day-2017 – Celebrating Genomics through Awareness: Linking with society”, a two days program was successfully completed. It was celebrated on 24th and 25th April in the premises of Nepal Academy of Science And Technology (NAST), Khumaltar, Lalitpur. This Program is organized by BSN in association with NAST, Tribhuvan University (T.U), and Kathmandu University (K.U), supported by the American Society of Microbiology (ASM), Himalaya College of Agriculture Science and Technology (HICAST), SANN International College, Nepalese Society of Biotechnology (NSB), Kathmandu University Biotechnology Creative (KUBiC) and Microbiology, Royal Himalaya Wine and Molecular Biology Research Associations (MiMRA) with the media partners viz. Nature Khabar, Himalaya Television, Microbiology Research Society, Education Samachar, Bio Hub Nepal, Times FM 90.6 MHz, Clzhub and Nepali Patra. Title awards like Best Biotech Student award, Research Scientist Award, and Inspirational figure award were sponsored by DR. KRIBB, Shikhar Biotech, and HICAST respectively. It had been visited by various professors, doctors, lecturers, scholars, and the general public. The program has an attractive event called Science March which was turned into DNA by Human Chain.
On the first day, there were various sub-programs such as Inaugural Ceremony, Symposium, Art Competition, DNA Model Competition, Essay Competition, Poster Presentation, Blood donation, and Eye Donation. There are altogether fifteen stalls from different organizations, labs, institutions, and universities. The chairperson of the program was the president of BSN, Mr. Nabin Narayan Munankarmi, and was inaugurated by the chief guest, Honorable Minister of Science and Technology Mr. Prem Bahadur Singh, Prem Bahadur Singh by lightening the oil lamp. Many Speakers Prof. Dr. Jaba Raj Pokhrel (Special guest), Mr. Anil Upreti (Chief coordinator of program), Prof. Dr. Krishna Das Manandhar (HOD, Central Department of Biotechnology, TU), Prof. Dr. Janardan Lamichhane (HOD, Biotechnology Department, KU), Dr. Mukunda Ranjit (President of Nepal Biotechnology Association (NBA)) and Dr. Rabindra Dhakal (Scientific advisor for Prime Minister of Nepal) had highlighted the importance of the DNA Day as well as lack of government’s effort in Biological Science. The closing ceremony was ended by the Chairperson of the program). The indoor event consisted of a symposium with four sessions while outdoor attractions include a stall exhibition and different competitions. Mr. Ranish Shrestha and Ms. Sharmistha Aryal work as MC for indoor sessions. The description of different sub-programs are:-
1. Symposium:-
To make the audience aware of the status and prospect of biotechnology, we did a symposium with four different sessions viz.
a. Medical and pharmaceutical Bioscience
Prof. Massimo Bellanda and Prof. Dr. Shyam Narayan Labh gave invited presentations while Ms. Archana Maharjan, Mr. Ankit Jaiswal, and Mr. Kapil Adhikari gave an oral presentation
b. Food and Industrial Bioscience
Prof. Dr. Ganga P. Kharel and Dr. Saroj Rana and Ms. Roji Pradhananga (Royal Himalaya Wine) gave invited presentations while Mrs. Rakshya Thapa, Mr. Subha Ratna Shakya, and Mr. Rakesh Prasad Bhagat gave an oral presentation
c. Plant and Agriculture Bioscience
Prof. Dr. Bijaya Pant and Dr. Bal Krishna Joshi gave an invited presentation while Mr. Sandesh Maharjan and Mr. Sandesh Neupane gave oral presentations.
d. Environmental Bioscience
Mr. Dibesh Karmacharya and Mr. Hari Krishna Sainju gave invited presentations while Ms. Niru Burlakoti, Mr. Sujan Bishwokarma, and Ms. Geeta Bhusal gave oral presentations.
Among oral presentations, the 1st prize was won by Ms. Archana Maharjan (CDBt, T.U), 2nd prize by Mr. Sujan Bishwokarma (CDBt, T.U), and 3rd prize by Mr. Subha Ratna Shakya (Zoology Department, Ascol).
2. DNA DAY Awards:-
BSN announce the DNA day awards in three categories
a Best Biotech Student Award: Mr. Mitesh Shrestha (Central Department of Biotechnology, TU) won the award
b. Research Scientist award: Dr. Kishor Pandey (Molecular Biology Unit, NAST) won the award
c. Inspirational figure award: Dr. Keshav Raj Rajbhadari (Taxonomist, Grass Expert, and National Herbarium) won the award
3. Art Competition:-
Altogether 14 student’s categories as above and below +2 participate in an art competition. Ms. Shreeya Tamrakar (NIST), Mr. Bikram Nepali (Agriculture Forest University), and Ms. Bindya Bajracharya (Tri-Chandra college) got 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prize respectively in the above +2 category while Mr. Ayush Khatakho (Sunshine School), Ms. Subistha Kayastha (Genuine Secondary School) and Shila Koju (Genuine Secondary School) got 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize in below +2 category.
4. DNA Model Competition:-
Altogether 6 groups from different colleges participate in the DNA model competition. KVC, DAV, and AITM got 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes respectively in the above +2 category while Sunshine School got 1st prize in the below +2 category.
5. Essay Competition:-
Altogether 35 students participate in the essay competition. Ms. Anamika Chaudhary (Laboratory Higher Sec. School) and Mr. Prajwal Khaiju (Genuine Secondary School) and Eva Sujakhu (Genuine Secondary School) got 1st and 2nd and 3rd prize respectively in below +2 category while Ms. Anisha Banjara, (Tri-Chandra College) Ms. Pallavi Shakya (SANN International College) and Mr. Suman Dhungel (NIST) got 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize respectively in above +2 category.
6. Poster Presentation:-
About 25 scholars presented their posters during the event.
7. Stall Exhibition
Altogether there were 16 stalls including BSN. Three from Universities viz. Tribhuvan University (Biotechnology Department), Kathmandu University (Biotechnology Department), and Agriculture Forest University (Biotechnology Department), two from society viz. American Society of Microbiology (ASM), Microbiology Research Society (MRS), five from the academic institutions viz. Tri-Chandra Multiple Campus, Himalayan College of Agriculture Science and Technology (HICAST), Kantipur Valley College (KVC), SANN International College, Asian Institute of Technology and Management (AITM), one governmental council National Agriculture Research Council (NARC), one trading company, Ambient technology, Two research institution viz. Annapurna Neurological Institute and Allied Sciences and Decode Genomics and Research Center (DGRC) to showcase their activities.
8. Blood Donation:-
Twenty-one scholars donated blood.
9. Eye Donation:-
About 15 people have shown a positive response to a donation of an eye.
10. Petition Signing campaign:-
More than 300 scholars signed the petition.
Along with these programs, various scholars and professors have visited to stalls for finding out the things related to life sciences and their advancements.
The second-day program was started from the Science March which was initiated from Satdobato and ended in the premises of NAST by forming DNA of the Human Chain. During the march, Symposium was going on in the NAST hall and a petition signing campaign was also going on. After that Flash mob was started and it was the source of entertainment to the audience. Dr. Shakuna Dani, (Physiotherapist, Annapurna Neuro Hospital) conducted a workshop on Art of living and Happiness. Then, the minister of Science and Technology Mr. Prem Bahadur Singh visited the stalls and had a glance at DNA models as well. The closing ceremony was commenced by Singh and Petition was handed over to the minister. He left the ceremony by putting his valuable word for biological science due to his busy schedule. After that, awards like Best Biotech Student Award, Inspirational Figure Award, and Research Scientist Award were given. Then, the prize distribution ceremony was started in which every winner got the prize. Along with that letters of recognition were provided to BSN Life members as well as tokens of love were given to associating partners, sponsors, media partners as well as stall representatives. The closing ceremony was ended with the speech of Chairperson, Mr. Nabin Narayan Munankarmi (President, BSN).
About 25 coordinators and 50 volunteers were working along with the Chief coordinator and executive member for making the program successful. Media were covering every event so that its publicity remains high. The event was also helpful to those who want to have networking, business meeting, research collaboration, idea exchange, solution seekers to the problem they faced in their research work.
In the nutshell, it can be concluded that BSN has successfully organized one of the mega-events in Nepal for Science and technology on the auspicious occasion of DNA Day 2017 by forming Human Chain DNA for the first time in Nepal.
